Why We Love This

Wonderful, pre-owned example of Collings' flagship mandolin, the MF5 Deluxe Varnish. We are quite fond of the one-piece, quilted maple back and sides. Along with the engraved Collings tailpiece and Deluxe headstock inlay, this is a stately, presentation-grade mandolin. Most importantly, it sounds the part.

In keeping with all Collings' varnish mandolins, this MF5DlxV has a quick response and a potent, open liveliness that makes for a very engaging playing experience. It can be loud and cutting, but sitting with this one, I am reminded how fun these are to play softly! Lengthy sustain with all shades of timbre are on tap. Only slight signs of previous use, too—a few scratches in the pickguard, touch of fretwear, and light imprints from an armrest.
