With lots of great vintage inventory floating around the shop these days, we thought we'd do something a bit more vintage-inspired with this latest City Limits from our friends at Collings Guitars.

Every now and then, we'll see an old player-grade Les Paul from the early 50s that has "been through it", for lack of a better phrase. Often times, these early Les Pauls reveal some of the more intriguing Maple tops that were once covered up with gold paint. Talented vintage restoration authorities often breathe new life into an old guitar by giving it a bit of the old 'Burst' treatment instead of reestablishing more of the Goldtop aesthetic, and we're celebrating that approach here!

This City Limits forgoes the more traditional humbucker and ABR-1 and Stopbar configuration for a more old-school wraparound bridge/tailpiece and P90 setup. Keeping some of the appointments to a more dressed-down level - like dot inlays and an unbound peghead - pulls in some inspiration from the great 50s Les Paul Special models. We're floored with the results, although it's not entirely surprising to see this iteration of the great Collings single-cut so perfectly executed. Sleek, streamlined, and effortless playability remain, but with a more unique tonal voice and response. The Throbak 55/56 P90s offer up equal parts richness and chime that can deliver sweet, round cleans with a touch of sparkle, all the way to a snappy growl with great bite and focused attack. The immediacy in response from the MojoAxe compensated wraparound tailpiece gives the player a bit more control of the dynamic response as well. 

The Lemon Burst represents a heavily UV-faded cherry sunburst finish over a great figured Maple top, just like some of those great old conversions. The contrast of that bright top finish, dark Rosewood fingerboard, and deep amber hue of the Mahogany body all tied together with amber knobs and cream/bone plastics makes for one hell of a stripped down beauty.

This CL is the perfect electric for the player who loves vintage vibe but yearns for a truly elevated playing experience.
