At first glance, you'd be forgiven for thinking Gil Yaron's masterful 'Bone H' is "simply" a Les Paul variant, but as with many things in life, looks can be deceiving. To be sure, the Bone has several things in common with a Les Paul and it can certainly cover that ground tonally - but - as mentioned, there's a bit more going on under the hood which shows itself once you sit down with it and plug in.
"For those who wish to cover all grounds in a single guitar the Bone-H will deliver that distinctive 59 LP tone but still be able to perform extremely well in the clean tone department. It will cover the classic vintage tonality and feel of the 50’s LP’s with a touch of the “Tele On Steroids” effect."
The building blocks of the Bone H are exactly what you'd expect from a highly regarded builder - old-growth/premium grade mahogany body and neck (though the body also has a paulownia core), premium/pre-CITES Brazilian rosewood fretboard, premium/highly-figured maple top, Gil's proprietary "Air Gap" pickups (more on this in a minute), a NOS '50s wiring harness, etc...all the good stuff.
As with all great instruments, it's what the builder does with these materials that matters. There's a certain magic to this guitar that's hard to pin-point but there's no question that you feel, and hear, it when playing. It's very lightweight, balances perfectly, and has an intoxicating mix of vintage and modern aspects with regards to the overall feel. The strings are slighty taut, but still slinky enough to not be fatiguing...and the tones?
So this is where things get interesting. The "Air Gap" pickups combine a PAF-style coil and a Broadcaster-style coil together in each pickup. Wait, a PAF and a Tele-style pickup...rolled into one? You can imagine how cool that is, and indeed, it is. Rich, deep midrange combined with a snappy, articulate top-end...best of both worlds? Perhaps. We were able to pull highly textured gain tones all the way through Wes-approved humbucker fatness and warmth with little effort. Tons of tones on tap, all super fun and inspiring. Good stuff to be sure.
Condition: Excellent. Only light signs of prior ownership are present.
