What intrigues us about this pre-owned Collings SJ is how un-Collings the sound is. Strange to say since we're such huge fans of the classic Collings tone. This varnish SJ though exhibits a certain roundness and fullness to the sound without some of metallic edge found in many Collings. It's that edgy brilliance that really makes a Collings stand out in a crowd but that's not always what a player wants or needs. This guitar can certainly be driven hard and will deliver volume in spades. Where it really shines is with a lighter, more nuanced attack. As a finger style guitar, it's extraordinary. Plenty of low end but measured and right in line with the woody mids and trebles. Take a flatpick to you as well and revel in it's clarity and evenness of tone. Overall, a very fine, versatile, "curveball" of a Collings.
The condition is quite nice with great action, neck set, and little to no fret wear. There are some noticeable dings in various places around the top and back, which is pretty typical on these varnish finished models. If you're looking for flawless and impeccable, look for a new one and and prepare to be astounded at what this one would price at in 2022!
