Engelmann spruce is an interesting tone wood and not something we often see on a Collings. Players are drawn to their OM1 for its punch and woody projection. Engelmann definitely tempers that laser-like Collings output and adds more warmth and texture to the tone. It asks that one approach the guitar with a lighter attack and think more in terms of chordal melodies, melodic fingerstyle and gentle strumming. Not that one couldn't drive this guitar with a more aggressive style but it seems to shine more when worked less. Either way, it's a fine opportunity to own a 5-plus year old Collings in superb condition and attractively priced. No wear or blem's to point out other than the book matched top displays a slight contrast in color from left to right. (For those unfamiliar with this phenomenon, we call it chatoyance, or the optical phenomenon where material has a changeable luster or color depending on how light reflects off the surface.)
