If you follow Ron Thorn's work, you'll likely have heard that he recently stopped building his highly regarded guitars under his own name. Why you ask? To join the very impressive roster of builders working at the Fender Custom Shop. Good / bad news to be sure, but it certainly places some added weight to the available Thorn guitars on the market.
Ron's work is legendary, and for good reason. On the surface, this near mint 2014 SoCal R/S appears to "simply" be a gorgeous mint green Stratocaster. Start poking around under the hood and the truth begins to surface...this is an incredibly well made, highly resonant, killer sounding, and innovative Strat!
Ron uses his own "precision lock" curved neck joint which creates more surface area (increased sustain & resonance), which also results in an extremely tight pocket that simply doesn't allow the neck to shift like other bolt-neck guitars. Ron hides the fret tangs by precisely routing groves instead of traditional fret slots, ensuring a smooth playing experience for the life of the guitar.
The floating bridge is Ron's own design, a design that puts the ball ends of the strings closer to the surface which creates a slinkier feel and also helps tuning stability when you pretend you're EVH (there's also a screw on the backplate that allows you to adjust the height of the trem bar - nice!).
There are so many thoughtful, well-designed touches that it's impossible to sum them all up in a quick description. Suffice it to say, if you're in the market for a new Strat, there are few builders making better guitars! Priced with original hardshell case.
