Teye S-Series “La Llama” (2010)

Our first Teye guitar just in on consignment!

We've been aware of Teye guitars for some time but haven't gotten our hands on one until now. Picking up where Zemaitis guitars left off, each Teye sports beautiful laser etched aluminum plates, easily their most distinctive visual component (for obvious reasons). Once you have one in-hand, you start to get a better idea of the complete picture - there are a lot of details that go far beyond just visual, making these incredibly soulful, versatile instruments.

This guitar has a handmade vibe in the best way - you can tell a human being made this and not a computer controlled machine. You notice this most in the overall feel of the guitar. It's an addictive, slinky feel that makes lead and chord work a breeze. The neck feels a bit like a '59 LP reissue, though a touch wider. It's very comfortable and the semi-gloss finish feels great.

Plugged in is when you really start to get what this guitar is all about - versatility. There are 3 Lollar Humbuckers, a 5-way switch (more on this in a minute), 2 Volume / 1 Tone, and the most defining tonal feature: 1 "Mood" knob. The Mood knob is an incredibly powerful EQ knob that allows you to dial in fat Les Paul-inspired tones all the way through Tele-meets-Piezo tones. Rick Turner's Model One came to mind when trying out the range of the Mood knob. Anything from fat, low-mid drenched overdriven tones (at times it sounded like we were plugged into a closed-back 4x12 even though we were in a Carr Mercury V combo) through chimey-but-muscular tones are all at the twist of a knob.

The 5-way switch also adds some interesting combos to the mix. Here's a quick break down of how it all works (it's not what you'd think instinctively):

-Switch position 5 (up) – Neck pick-up

-4 – Neck and Bridge pickup out-of-phase (the ‘Peter Green’ sound)

-3 (middle) – Neck and Bridge pickups normal

-2 – Bridge plus Middle pickup

-1 (down) – Bridge pickup

-Position 2 with Bridge volume rolled to zero – Middle pickup alone

-In between positions 2 and 3 – All three pickups

Whew! You get the idea - tons of tones on tap! Combined with striking visuals, a soulful handmade build, and an excellent setup, this is an extremely cool guitar. Easy to see why Teye has carved out such an excellent reputation! Priced with hardshell case and certificate of authenticity.
