PRS McCarty 594 Faded Whale Blue 10 Top (2016)

With the McCarty 594 model, Paul Reed Smith set out to "create a vintage-sounding instrument that offers the extreme reliability that comes from our modern-day manufacturing." Given that players like John Mayer have called the 594 "the best new guitar I've played in years", seems they hit the mark.

This is the first McCarty 594 we've had pass through the shop and were excited to sit down with it given its reputation. As expected, the build quality is flawless - a hallmark of PRS instruments. It's a very comfortable 7lbs 10oz and balances perfectly for seated or standing playing. A more familiar 3-way switch location on the upper horn, dual volume knobs placed in a way that allow you to turn both down at once, and the asymmetrical Pattern Vintage neck carve make it clear that the player's comfort was paramount when designing the 594 (named for its 24.594" scale length, btw).

Speaking of the neck carve, the chunkier, asymmetrical Pattern Vintage carve is a highlight for us. It's chunky, somewhat like a late 50s Gibson, but has a touch less shoulder on it. Specifically, less shoulder on the treble side, more on the bass side. It's easily (for us at least) the most "vintage" feeling part of this guitar. The feel of the neck can push a guitar in a modern or vintage direction faster than most any other aspect of the guitar (look aside), right?

Plugged in, the 58/15 LT pickups (LT = "low turns") combined with push/pull coil taps on each tone control yield a staggering variety of vintage-inspired tones. Thick, punchy, midrange-rich humbucker tones through articulate, snappy single coil (well, split coil) tones are easily accessible. Clean or overdriven, these are great sounding pickups and definitely achieve Paul's vision for combining vintage tones with a more modern guitar.

Condition: Near mint. Very few/light signs of prior ownership.

After spending time with the 594, it's easy to understand all the accolades it's received. Vintage-minded players who aren't shy to embrace modern builds will find lots to love here. A gigging guitarist's dream guitar. Priced with hardshell case.
