Collings 290 DC w/Charlie Christian (2014)

"Every day we try to make a better guitar, every day. You're trying to reach for more, trying to do better, not trying to do the same. A lot of companies are trying to do the same, and that's okay - that's their deal. We're trying to stretch that. Our goal is a little more." - Bill Collings

Does it get any cooler than having Collings build a John Lennon-inspired version of their already great 290 model? We think not.

We're huge fans of the 290 model at TME. Mahogany slab body, short-scale, P90 in the bridge position, and in this case a Lollar Charlie Christian pickup in the neck position? All the stripped down elegance and tone that made the original Gibson LP Juniors and Specials so great taken it to a more refined place with the "Collings treatment".

In hand, the neck of this beautiful Crimson finished 290 has a wonderful '59 LP-esq carve and the set-up is great for a variety of playing styles. But let's get the question we're all curious about - what's the deal with that CC pickup in the neck position? How does it sound? In a word, gorgeous. It blends perfectly with the bridge P90, but has a very different flavor as you'd expect.

The bridge P90 has a killer, almost Tele-like twang with a more pronounced midrange bite - not surprising to hear for anyone familiar with P90s. The CC has the same level of output, but quite a bit more bass and a more neutral mid-range in comparison. Imagine taking a really great neck position P90 and combining it with an equally inspiring Strat neck pickup. Fat, round, but always clear and bell-like.

Condition: Excellent. Light pick marks on the pickguard, one or two very small indentations on top and one on the back of the headstock, very, very fine finish scratches on the back (could be buffed out), and light fret wear are the only signs of prior ownership.

Whether your a Lennon devotee or not, we'd highly recommend checking out this gently used 290 if you like the idea of a simple, straight-forward guitar that has a surprising amount of sophistication hiding up its sleeve. Priced with hardshell case.

On consignment, no trades please.
