Ellis F5 Reserve w/ Torch & Wire Inlay (2018)

On Hold

It's not often we get an Ellis F5 mandolin as customized as this one back on trade, but if you're a fan of Tom's work and you've been waiting for "the one" to come along give us a call! We picked the wood and chose the tailpiece for this instrument on a visit to the Ellis workshop, and it's great to see it back in the showroom. The condition is near mint: there's a miniscule smudge in the finish on the treble side of the neck near the body (almost impossible to see). And since the finish is spirit varnish, it's had a little over a year to cure and sink into the wood (some microscopic pores are visible if you look closely). But really -- both of those items are nitpicking. Most people looking at this mandolin would think it's brand new; and its sensational private stock Quilted Maple and tortoise-bound visual aesthetic are as captivating as they ever were. This is a hugely resonant mandolin, with a voice that's simply ... complete. It's perfectly balanced, with a great, sparkling high end. Priced with its original custom-built Collings vintage-style hard case.
