Gibson J-55 (1940)

Out of Stock

Very rare 1940 Gibson J-55 just into the shop for consignment! The J-55 is a sort of Advanced Jumbo meets J-200 hybrid; and really, the mustache bridge is the only thing J-200-esque about it (though it's admittedly hard to miss!). The J-55 features Mahogany back & sides, Red Spruce top, bound top, back and fingerboard, 25.4" scale length and 1 11/16" nut width. And like an Advanced Jumbo, the neck profile is a fairly shallow C (not a chunky baseball-bat shape like you'd find on a J-35 from this period). This particular guitar is largely original, though it's seen some work over the years. We can only assume it was a gigging guitar for some time, as a pickup has been previously installed & removed leaving two plugged holes in the top and treble side (see photos). The bolts have been removed from the bridge, though the bridge plate appears original and otherwise unaltered. Someone has also bored out a bit of mass around the truss rod access point, in an attempt to fit a larger wrench around the rod. All that said, it's a great-playing, huge sounding guitar -- with a tone somewhere in between J-200 jangle and AJ rumble. It's got a full, throaty bass -- much better than any J-200 we've heard. But the top end has the snappier chime associated with the great country music strumming guitars.

This very vibey, very rare guitar is priced with its original hard case. We're requesting interested parties contact us for purchase details and shipping options.
