Marchione Semi-Hollow Deluxe (2016)

Texas-based master luthier Stephen Marchione builds archtops, classical guitars, electric and acoustic guitars, even violins. He utilizes his knowledge of both classical and jazz construction in each guitar he makes and the results are nothing short of stunning. His clients include Paul Simon, Leni Stern, Mark Knopfler, Vernon Reid, and John Abercrombie to name a few.

Let's get this out of the way...this is an amazing guitar, period. Unbelievably thin, it's a simply a dream to play. Let's dig in, shall we?

The Semi-Hollow Deluxe design originally came about as a collaboration of sorts between NYC-based jazz guitarist, Mike Moreno, and Stephen Marchione. Stephen chatted with Mike after a gig, duly impressed with Mike's chops, and mentioned that he felt he could build Mike a semi-hollow guitar that would surpass his current guitar in both tone and playability. Using Marchione's Mark Whitfield signature archtop design as the basis for Mike's guitar, Stephen delivered a guitar that both he and Mike were thrilled with. Count us in that camp, too!

Beyond the eye-catching original design, the first thing that really strikes you when picking up this guitar is the size. Sure, it's a 15" wide guitar, pretty standard - but - it's only about 1 to 1 7/8" deep! Incredible. Comfort is the name of the game here, and a total weight of 6lbs 1oz combined with the body dimensions makes this one of the most comfortable guitars we've played in a long time. Speaking of the body, this is a hand-carved, body, bridge, tailpiece...the whole deal. We'd expect no less from one of the world's best archtop guitar makers!

The neck is incredibly comfortable - a "contoured C carve" - and measures approximately .86" @ the first fret, and .96" @ the 10th fret. Think slightly less chunky late 50s Gibson as a reference point. The fretwork is immaculate and creates an awesome left-hand feel (stainless frets, btw).

Acoustically this guitar has a beautiful, papery mids voice - snappy, loud, resonant...Plugged in? Gorgeous, 3-dimensional tones that could easily trick you into thinking you're playing an L5. Fantastic dynamic range and touch-sensitivity. Being a semi-hollowbody guitar, you can get quite loud without worrying about feedback issues.

Condition: Near mint save for the tiniest bit of finish wear on the edge of the fingerboard in one or two spots.

This is only the second Marchione instrument we've had in the shop and we're every bit as impressed as we were the first time. Fantastic instruments! Priced with Calton case.
