This 2015 Gibson Johnny A Standard might be one of our favorites of the one we've had pass through the shop! It's an example of a great, modern-production Gibson and the more traditional look is what really seals the deal for us.
What initially grabs you is the look - familiar, yet a little different somehow. Upon further inspection you notice some really nice, subtle details: the multi-ply binding tips the hat to a Les Paul Custom, the neck carve feels like a great blend of a 50s / 60s ES-335, the body is squarely from the SG camp, while the semi-hollow construction brings in a strong ES-335 vibe. These all add up to a very playable instrument that immediately feels like a vintage guitar.
The tones are what you'd expect for this type of construction and wood combination - punchy, warm, articulate...like a great ES-335, this is a very versatile guitar. The neck feels great and has a 59 Les Paul-like carve (chunky, not a ton of shoulder, and ever so slightly flat).
Condition: Near mint save for one tiny finish chip on the back of the neck near the 3rd fret (we didn't feel it when playing) and two tiny smudges in the finish (back of the guitar and near the input jack). These imperfections are very minor
An excellent buy for someone in the market for a great semi-hollow that's more comfortable to play and has a look all its own. Priced with the original hardshell case.
