Gibson L-Century (1934)

First unveiled in 1933 at the Chicago Century of Progress Expo, the Gibson L-C was essentially an L-00 with curly maple back and sides and a very distinctive white pearloid fingerboard. Material sciences were apparently a big sign of progress in the 1930's. This is a very fine example from 1934.The sunburst is that classic smokey, dark hue found on many Gibson's from that period and adds a luster to the delicate curl of the maple back and sides. There is one well-repaired top crack, visible in the photos. The crack has been expertly cleated. There are two small cracks along the fingerboard extension, glued but not cleated; very tight. The top has an expected amount of belly--not too severe and it does not compromise the overall set-up. The condition becomes secondary once you strum a few chords on this gem. Superb presence, round and woody notes that jump out at the slightest touch, and that big ol' chunky resonance that one only finds in the best of the old Gibson's. For a little guitar, this one provides much more than its size portends.
