The Mesa/Boogie Mark II series represents one of the most legendary boutique amplifier designs of the 20th century. Amplifier wiz and founder Randall Smith took the concept of a compact tube combo and totally flipped it on its head, packing upwards of 100 watts with myriad of features into a small footprint format that hadn't really been done before. While various iterations of the Mark II series exist, it is the C+ version that has long been considered the very best version of the circuit. We're quite fortunate and thrilled to be able to offer up this absolute gem - an original 1984 Mesa/Boogie Mark IIC+ 75 Watt Hardwood 1x12 Combo with matching 1x15 extension cabinet.

A true marvel of its time, this Mark IIC+ is the final version of the Mark II series and fully realized at that, with tweaks to the circuit and overall functionality of the amp that has elevated its status to what it is today. This model/variant is most famously associated with James Hetfield of Metallica, and was heavily featured on seminal recordings And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, Ride the Lightning, and the Black Album.

A total of four 6L6 power tubes are responsible for the 100 watts of total output in stock configuration, but with the use of the factory Simul-Class circuitry and toggle switch, the inner pair of tubes is running in Class A/B and the outer in Class A which allows for a combination of 6L6 and EL34 power tubes to be used. This is one of the crowning features of the Simul-class circuit, and it allows for more expansive tonal variety both clean and gained up.

Within the subset of Mark II variants, this 75 watt model forgoes the EQ circuitry and reverb. However, an excellent sounding effects loop with a presence control makes integration of your favorite reverb/delay/modulation effects easy.

When it comes to tone, there's almost nothing the Mark IIC+ can't do. It delivers big, rich cleans with tremendous fidelity, all easily accessed and tweakable via the robust EQ section. Engaging the Lead Channel quickly reminds you of why these amps became so popular - thick and sustaining overdrive with an incredible feel and dynamic response. There's no doubt the massive custom-wound transformers are playing a role here. You can make any guitar feel right at home with this rig.

As Mark IIC+ models more specifically have climbed in value and status, it's always nice to see a circuit that has remained original in almost every way possible. With the exception of a replaced Standby switch, the amp's critical tone-shaping components are all original. Transformers are of the correct type and vintage (42nd week of 1983 for the power transformer, 41st week of 1983 for the output transformer), and chassis marks are all correct, including the faded but present "+" mark above the power cable, and a 6/84 marker date on the underside of the chassis. The power tubes are Mesa STR440s and are running healthy. The Mesa labeled Black Shadow MC90 12" speaker is a replacement that was made in December of 1998, indicating it may have replaced a blown speaker sometime in 1999/2000 or later. The rhythm/lead footswitch is also included and works great.

The original Imbuya hardwood cabinet (also dated 6/84 on the inside of the back panel) and wicker grill present an unmistakable aesthetic that is still eye-catching and unique to Mesa's designs to this day. The cabinet does show signs of moderate wear throughout - a byproduct of gigging an exposed exotic wood cabinet as opposed to the more resilient tolex option - but it's structurally sound and still presents very well. The wicker is in great shape and has retained most of its inherent tension with no visible breaks or splits. The back panel is missing one screw.

To top things off, the amp includes an equally rare and original Imbuya and wicker 1x15 extension cabinet with an original EVM 15" 200 watt Black Shadow speaker. The extension cabinet is considerably cleaner, with the wicker presenting as clean or cleaner than the combo. The speaker jack appears to be a replacement, but works perfectly without issue.

A form-fitting ATA road case and slipcover accommodates the combo, which is a nice option to have when carting an amp of this weight class around to gigs. The case itself shows its age and has moderate to heavy wear, but is functional.

A heavyweight in tone and physical nature, this is frankly an amp that does not come to market quite often due to its rabid popularity and relatively low production number in this format. This is the first early Mesa we've had in our shop, and it's one of the most impressive early Mesa outfits we've ever seen.
