This 00 has a quality of tone that is purely sublime, combining the best aspects of steel and gut into one magical instrument. Looking for that elusive parlor guitar? This 00 embodies the essence of parlor, and any modern luthier would be hard-pressed to build a guitar of this size that can rival it in clarity, sweetness and volume.

Believe it or not, the Style 30 was once as popular as 42-style Martins. But the whims of culture and the fickle nature of consumers seem to have relegated the 30 to the annals of guitar history. First introduced in 1899, the Style 30 featured an abalone rosette with fine colored marquetry purflings and silver plated tuning machines and a gorgeous ebony pyramid bridge that puts any modern remake to shame. And just think, for an extra $5, you could have bought the style 34 and had pearl tuning buttons and an ivory bridge! And people think today's consumer has too many choices.

This 1903 00-30 is in exceptional condition for its age. The finish has been reworked at some point - a possible refinish or at least overspray - but it was expertly done. There are several repaired side cracks and a couple of back cracks, and the neck looks to have been reset as well. Again, very well done. The top, however, is crack-free and shows no signs of bellying. The insides are clean with a small bridge plate patch to keep the ball ends anchored on the plate. Like all Martins from this period, it was intended for gut strings; but this guitar can handle light steel strings with no problem (it's strung with Monel .011 presently). It has the original saddle and bridge pins as well as bar frets. We acquired it from the son of the second owner, who'd owned the guitar since the late 1940's and played the living daylights out of it (as evidenced by the wear you see on the top). It's been well loved, and remains in excellent condition. When it came to us, it appeared no work had ever been done it. We had luthier Glen Nichols (Retrograde Guitars) reset the neck and refret it (the original frets were toast); and now it's playing like new whilst showing all it's got to give in the tone department. As with most Sitka topped, tapered braced Martins of the period, this instrument has the warmth, punch and woodiness that keeps us coming back to vintage guitars. With its Brazilian Rosewood body, this 000-21 offers versatility, collectibility and tone that'd make a purist envious -- all at nice savings from a slightly more adorned style-28 guitar. It'd be an excellent guitar for old-time backup, but makes for a rich playing experience by itself as well (there are all sorts of sonic colors to discover in this guitar, up and down the fingerboard). New frets have it playing beautifully, and the original finish displays just the right amount of honest wear. This guitar is priced with a Harptone hardshell case.

On consignment.

All Mahogany construction

Forward shifted x-brace

Scalloped bracing

Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard & bridge

Neck reset by Judge Wolfe

New frets

All interior structural components original

1 3/4" Nut width

24 7/8" Scale length

2 5/16" String spacing

Harptone HSC

Serial #62235

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0452/1387/6381/products/c691b526886aa15020afadc295acc204.jpg?v=1660332056
martin-2-21-1911
Martin 2-21 (1911)

This lovely little 1911 Martin 2-21 would make a great addition to the collection of a guitarist desiring a pre-steel string Martin flattop for fingerstyle playing. Other than those items, it's entirely original, light as air, and wondrous-sounding. Of curious note is the absence of a peghead decal. The headstock appears unmolested, with clean, original finish and no sign of a decal's presence at any point. How could that be? The style-21 dreadnoughts, only produced between the late 1950's and middle 1960's, are often overlooked in favor of their big brother, the classic D-28. But if you've scrolled past those D-21s in search of your forever Martin, let us be the one to say it ... STOP! Overlooked is exactly the right way to think of these guitars: essentially, they are D-28s, with the trim of a D-18. OK, true, the D-21 has a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and bridge, like a D-18 from this era would; but it's also got the coveted Brazilian rosewood back and sides of a D-28. If you want the warm, powerful, broken-in sound of a vintage D-28, and you can sleep at night knowing you own a guitar with some minor aesthetic differences, consider the dinner bell rung. This particular D-21 is lightly constructed, in fabulous, clean original condition, with recent neck reset and setup by luthier Pat DiBurro. (A strap button has also been added.) No cracks, and all original components (bracing, bridge plate, etc.) are intact and squeaky clean. This is a great sounding guitar, and a dynamite deal as far as vintage flattops are concerned. The guitar comes to us from a long-time client, who purchased it from the original owner's estate. While the guitar has been played and serviced over the years (the bridge is a replacement, and the nut has been shimmed), it displays pride of ownership in spades ~ this is an instrument that was loved and well preserved. The body is shockingly clean and crack-free. Ditto for the neck, fingerboard, hardware, and all internal components.

Let's revisit the topic of sound briefly, since it certainly bears revisiting in this case! While post-war D-28s won't equal a 1930's guitar in the categories of low end and projection, this '49 will give most of them a serious run around the corral. Excellent, pillowy bass, full, punchy, dry mids, and a snappy-yet-round treble register are all on tap here. This is the consummate bluegrass flatpicking guitar for a player who prefers the narrower neck of a '40's guitar, but the classic, sumptuous voice will be appreciated instantly by, well, anyone who plays guitar and gravitates towards the classic warmth of a Martin D-28.

The bridge, as mentioned above, is not original; we had it expertly re-contoured, adjusted the saddle angle and, more importantly shifted the saddle forward to optimize intonation. Interesting thing about old Martins, not everything was perfect back then. The fact that this guitar was played for 70 years without anyone ever complaining about how out-of-tune it was up the neck is astounding (Snark tuners are the devil!). The saddle height is low, and, in conjunction with the guitar's mellow neck set, poses no structural concerns. New frets have also been installed, and the guitar plays beautifully up and down the neck. The action currently measures 3/32", bass side, and 2/32", treble side, under tension of medium gauge strings.

The original owner had the guitar stored in a 1970's Martin thermoplastic case, suggesting no hard case was purchased with the guitar (or that if it were, it was abandoned in the 70's). We'd agree. And while we're at it, we'd probably edge that bar down a little farther to 1964 ... after which Martin moved to their new factory, and changed many significant production techniques that contribute to the "pre-war" tonal footprint. So, D-28s made between 1965 and 1969 are transitional guitars: they've still got Brazilian rosewood backs & sides, but they'll be a bit heavier, with thicker tops and, the later into the 60's one gets, larger (rosewood) bridge plates. While this 1969 D-28 won't be mistaken for a 1930's herringbone, it's a great sounding example of a new-factory dreadnought, and just entered its 53rd year of existence. It's got the dry, woody, yet silky smooth tone no new guitar boasts. And hey, plenty of our favorite Beatles & Zeppelin records feature late 60's D-28s sounding just fine. This is one of the fabled small-bodied guitars that will hang with ease at the adult table. Big, powerful bass, pronounced mids, and super-chunky trebles ~ all within the supremely balanced voice an 0 provides. The guitar is in excellent condition for an instrument that's about to turn 93 years old. The bridge is a well-made replacement, which has been recontoured by TJ Thompson; but all other structural components are original. There's plenty of play wear, but nothing unsightly (it's rather sightly, if you ask us -- the patina is beautiful on this one). The guitar has also been refretted by TJ with period correct-height bar fret stock; and it plays about as easily as a guitar can play, with low action and a thick, full response everywhere on the fingerboard.

This 0-28 would be a fabulous entry point into the world of 1930's Martins for a buyer who's been eager to jump into the pond. And if it's tone you're after, we couldn't echo Morey's catchphrase loudly enough. This is the cleanest and most well-preserved pre-war 12-fret 000-18 that's been at TME since the days when Eric Schoenberg held court behind the counter. If you're looking at the photos and thinking, "There seems to be a decent amount of wear present for you to call it 'clean,'" ... it's worth a look around to see how many 12-fret 1930's 000-18s appear ever in any condition. When they surface, they often bear signs of previous amateur "repair" work that have severely compromised their structural integrity (and thereby, the sound). The last one that walked into TME had been converted to left-handed (back taken off, all original bracing removed). The one before that had been refinished, and the top sanded to about the thickness of a Post-it note. You get the idea. The tragedy of those mistakes is compounded by the simple fact that these (pre-war 12-fret 000-18s) are extremely rare instruments: not many at all were produced in the late 1920's, relative to 0 and 00 production, and not many were made in the early 30's before the more popular OMs evolved and production shifted heavily towards 14-fret instruments.

So ... imagine our delight when this particular 12-fret 000-18 arrived, its original structure and finish almost entirely intact. We say "almost" because there was one problem that needed fixing: an older neck reset had left a too-big fingerboard shim installed under the extension. The original frets had also been ground down, resulting in, shall we say, imperfect playability. A new fingerboard shim was installed by TJ Thompson, who also re-fretted the guitar with proper-height bar fret stock. Playability restored, and no work should be required for a very long time.

The sound was restored as well. This guitar's sound is monstrous, with the best low end you could ask for from a small-bodied instrument. The classic Mahogany / Red spruce dryness is present in encyclopedic fashion, with the punchy, round mids, and fat trebles on the wish list of everyone who's thinking about acquiring a 1930's Martin. We know this guitar well, and have set it up for its current owner a few times over the last ten years. TJ Thompson reset the neck and dressed the frets approximately five years ago, and the setup doesn't appear to have moved a millimeter since then. The guitar's structure is very clean, crack free, and completely original, making it as collectible a 96-year old guitar as you'll encounter. The tone is warm, warm, warm; and the playability couldn't be nicer. The OM-18P was produced in small numbers in 1930 & 1931, before being discontinued (evidence of its scant popularity). To be fair, the OM itself was still new, having debuted in late 1929; and a plectrum variant, hence the "P" in the model nomenclature, must have been seen as somewhat limited. Players used to a four-string neck, and in need of the bright, snappy sound associated with it would likely have already been at home on either a tenor guitar or a plectrum banjo. And guitarists intrigued by the new 14-fret OM would likely not have much use for one lacking the low end and broader dynamic range provided by six strings. In today's modern acoustic landscape, a plectrum guitar with an OM-sized body is an interesting concept for mandolin players who use their instrument to accompany their voice ...

But still. Who among us would look at an all-original 1931 Martin OM-18 with a four-string neck and not think, "If only it had six strings!" And if we could wave a magic wand and have said guitar converted to six-string setup by anyone in the world, who would we choose? We know who we'd call first. This guitar (serial number 46808) has been converted to conventional six-string setup by TJ Thompson, who made the neck and bridge seen in our photos. The original body of 46808 remains in excellent vintage condition: structurally solid as a rock, crack-free, with just the right amount of wear (someone certainly liked to strum around the fingerboard extension). This is a great-sounding guitar, with a mature, woody voice, and the expected clarity and response of a 1930's Martin OM.

Priced with a TKL hard case. We've always been fans of the 12-fret 00 and the spartan style-21 Martins ~ these guitars offer unrivaled tone per pound, and a handsome, stripped down aesthetic that instantly calls to mind the golden era of American guitar making. This is great instrument for buyers who evaluate tone first; and that said, not much at all has been done to this lovely 00-21. The body may have been lightly oversprayed long ago, but all structural components are original and there's only one small top crack (bass side, lower bout). Luthier Cat Fox recently performed a neck reset and refret, making a new nut and saddle in the process. The work is expert-level, and super-clean; and the guitar plays beautifully, with action an immeasurable hair over 3/32" (bass side) and 2/32" (treble side). Plenty of saddle height remains should the next owner want lower action. The sound is meaty, robust, and explosive, with terrific volume and depth of overtones. It's a great-sounding guitar, whose very minor imperfections pale in comparison to the sonic value it offers.
