It's got the classic 3-tone Sunburst finish that has faded nicely over time, with a fair amount of red still present. It's got a gorgeous Ash body with a beautifully aged and naturally relic'ed Blonde finish that's turned into almost a dark cream color. The single-ply 5-hole pickguard represents the quintessential Telecaster 2.0 look, moving on from the original "Blackguard" aesthetic of the early 50s.

We have a thing for V necks around here, and the neck on this puppy doesn't disappoint. In fairly typical early '57 fashion, this is a bit of a transitional V carve, with a slightly softer midpoint and a touch more roundness in the shoulders. We wouldn't call it a Soft V, but it's not as dramatic of a V profile often seen later on in the year. It's no wonder that these guitars sound the way they do plugged in - all of that acoustic energy is brought to life in an exceptional sounding set of pickups.

The original stagger-pole bridge pickup is another period change from the early 50s flat pole style, adding a bit more push on those D and G strings to balance out the response. Plenty of twang with strong treble and a snappy bass, but more than capable of delivering the goods through a cranked 5E3 or the like with some midrange definition. The original neck pickup has been expertly rewound by Lindy Fralin, and puts out some great strat-like neck position tone thanks to its slightly higher output. The original 50s circuit remains, with the "dark" circuit intact, leading to a neck pickup in position 2, and finally the bridge pickup in position 3. Lively and resonant, we're instantly reminded of that feeling of those 50s and 60s standouts. Super comfortable weight combined with a wonderful medium C neck makes playability a breeze, even with some lean and low frets. The original pickups feel great as well - the neck pickup has a bit of a Strat-like quality to it, and the bridge pickup delivers all the Tele twang we love with a little more attitude. The earliest of the 70s Teles often share a lot of the desired features that make late 60s Teles so lauded, which continues to enhance their value. This one crossed the production line before the 3-bolt micro-tilt neck and addition of a second string tree, and some say that you end up with what is essentially a 67-69 spec Tele (without the maple cap neck of course).

Tone is on the brighter side thanks to an original wiring harness consisting of 1966 1 MEG pots, but that's easily tamed with a quick turn of the tone knob. Wide open, it's Bakersfield twang all day long, but once you get used to the feel and response of the higher value pots, you find those sweet spots where you can coax a fatter, rounder tone out of the guitar. A great Tele will always find a way to get you what you want if you let it, and this one does just that. Coming in at a great mid-weight for Strats (about 7 3/4 lb), it rings like a tuning fork with great natural sustain and acoustic volume. Surely the expert level refret by Laurent Brondel is helping here - having a fresh set of Jescar 55090 frets installed to replace the very worn originals absolutely transformed this guitar from good to beyond great. The comfortable Slim profile neck splits its shape between C and D going up the neck, with a nice lean taper making it a breeze to play in any position.

Plugged in, the original stagger-pole grey bottom pickups deliver classic Strat tone with a bright, punchy voice. Of course, you can find those 2 and 4 positions with some delicate placement of the switch.

In terms of originality, it's somewhat of a unique piece. The body, electronics, hardware, and plastics all date squarely to 1969. The wiring harness has pot codes that date to the 34th week of 1969. The pearloid-backed 3-ply guard is correct for the year as well. The original stamped Fender Pat Pend saddles and tremolo bridge are intact and original, albeit with the replacement of 3 saddle height screws that were previously rusted out. The neck is dated March of 1968 but looks like it may have sat at the factory before being paired up with the guitar. It has a poly finish throughout which indicates finish was applied after Fender changed over from nitrocellulose as well. It certainly makes for an interesting story, but not entirely out of the question considering how Fender was operating at the time.

As a single-owner instrument that received a healthy amount of play time over the years, the frets were simply worn through and unsalvageable. It's got all of the features befitting of a great early/mid 60s example, like clay dots, 3-ply green guard, an 'L' neck plate, and double-line Kluson tuners. Stamped on the end of the neck following the two-digit year of manufacture, the 'A' designation represents a change in nut width from the standard 'B' neck spec of 1 5/8" to a skinnier 1 1/2" nut width, most commonly used on short scale and/or student model guitars like the Duo Sonic. It's most certainly original to the guitar, as it sports the original "spaghetti" Stratocaster decal and standard scale length of 25 1/2", along with some imprints on the neck that match up with the neck pocket. For all intents and purposes, this indicates that it was a Special Order guitar.

The frets are also original, featuring the smaller wire of the era; despite the frets being small, they've still got enough height to welcome a nice playing experience. A fantastic example in every way, with nothing more than your average to below-average play wear. Very well cared for and maintained throughout its life. Buckle rash adjacent to the bottom left corner of the tremolo cavity cover that has revealed bare wood. The tremolo cavity cover has a small chip in the top left corner. The original 3-ply pickguard shows minimal shrinkage and only one crack of note, in between the pickguard edge and the neck pickup mounting hole on the bass side, along with a small repaired crack in the pickguard off the top edge on the treble side. There's a slight protrusion in the fingerboard at the 17th fret indicating a neck screw may have been cut slightly too long from the factory, causing the screw tip to extend through the neck heel and into the veneer. Frets do, however, remain in great shape and still maintain nice height and shape. The fingerboard is very clean and free of depressions or divots, and the back of the neck only reveals 1-2 small dings that can be felt. Most notably, an old DIY humbucker rout was done some time ago. It's well concealed under the replacement 3-ply pickguard, and would make a future hot rod "fat tele" modification easy. The original wiring harness was replaced with the more desired 250k pot setup, but the entire original wiring harness remains intact and is included. The pot codes on the harness are of 1966 vintage, which is very common for early 70s Fenders when Fender had purchased a massive inventory of 1 MEG CTS pots that they spent years using in builds. The neck pickup is a replacement and was loosely identified as being a Seymour Duncan telecaster neck pickup. The bridge pickup is original, but the actual bridge is a later Fender replacement with 6 individual saddles. A single string ferrule is also a replacement (low E).

Given the rise in vintage prices for these teles, this is a example at a player-grade price point.

Priced with original Fender hardshell case

Factory Blonde finish over Ash body

Maple neck w/ original frets and F stamped tuners

Neck date stamp 3AUG71B

Medium C neck profile: .86" @ 1st fret / .94" @ 12th fret

Replaced neck pickup (6.92k) and pickguard

Original bridge pickup - 5.82k ohm output

Replaced bridge

Modern 250k wiring harness

Original harness included - 1 MEG pot codes '6636' indicating 36th week of 1966

Neck pickup humbucker rout

Weight: 7lb 12oz

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0452/1387/6381/products/fa1d6ac0ba2b9280c0c2968663394940.jpg?v=1667941678
fender-telecaster-blonde-used-1974
Fender Telecaster, Blonde (USED, 1974)

We love one-owner guitars here at TME because they tell a story about the people that have owned them, and they educate us on why people have continued to own them.

That rings true even when it's not a pre-war Martin or 50s Gibson/Fender. Perhaps the original owner knew that, too.

This is a wonderful sounding and playing example made even better with a couple of changes. First off, the original neck pickup had shorted out long ago and was misplaced, giving way to what is now a fantastic sounding Don Mare Big Box Archtop single coil. The other change - and a very common one at that - was the replacement of the stock electronics that used 1 MEG potentiometers with the more tonally familiar and accepted 250k potentiometers. Good news is the entire harness was removed and remains fully intact and operational should the next owner decide to return it back to that stock configuration. A fully intact pencil date of 10-58 corresponds with the 10/58 body pencil date found in the middle pickup rout of the body. Original Kluson single line tuners function very well. The original Fender decal has deteriorated moderately, but remains identifiable. It's fairly common to see decals from this period shed away from the headstock, some even disappearing completely.

The original Sunburst finish is gorgeous, with just the right amount of fading and wear that you'd expect a great electric like this to show. Removing the original single-ply pickguard from the guitar reveals clean, original pickup routs with proper nail holes and correct worm rout in the bridge pickup cavity. The aforementioned pencil date of 10/58 is clearly legible in the middle pickup cavity. This Fender Mustang Bass shares an unbelievable feeling 1966 Mustang Bass neck with a 1978 Mustang Bass body and electronics, and it's a great example of what can happen when two pieces just plain work together in all the right ways. These compact short-scale basses are a total blast to play, and this one is no exception.

The CBS-era Mustang Bass neck has lived a life, and it shows! It's got some amazing character by way of some deeply yellowed, checked, and worn original lacquer finish. The original 'lollipop' Fender tuners work great and come with patina to match the wear. With the exception of a replaced nut, the neck is all there, frets and all. We can't stress enough just how great it is to play.

The body is all 1978 here. Original Mustang Red finish over Ash body shows some vibey forearm and contact wear on the bass side body contours as well as some good old fashioned buckle rash up near the neck plate. The pickup is original to the bass, and the volume/tone pots have been replaced along the way (a newer CTS 250k volume pot and a 250k tone pot from the 10th week of 1981). In typical Mustang fashion, it delivers great punchy tone with a little bit of P Bass flavor. The 30" scale length makes it a little more forgiving and inviting to play (these are great basses for a guitar player who wants a recording or writing bass!).

Just another example of an instrument that has the tonal and performance-based qualities we look for in a good vintage piece.
