Local artists soon came to Carl for custom made guitars, and after establishing himself as a guitar maker, his instruments became recognized in the high end jazzbox world alongside the likes of Stromberg and D'Angelico. Carl continued to build custom guitars through the 1970s, albeit with an incredibly low output. The hand carved violin-grade spruce and maple is absolutely gorgeous, and is highlighted by the hand-applied nitrocellulose finish that has aged beautifully. Lively and resonant, we're instantly reminded of that feeling of those 50s and 60s standouts. Super comfortable weight combined with a wonderful medium C neck makes playability a breeze, even with some lean and low frets. The original pickups feel great as well - the neck pickup has a bit of a Strat-like quality to it, and the bridge pickup delivers all the Tele twang we love with a little more attitude. This one crossed the production line before the 3-bolt micro-tilt neck and addition of a second string tree, and some say that you end up with what is essentially a 67-69 spec Tele (without the maple cap neck of course).

Tone is on the brighter side thanks to an original wiring harness consisting of 1966 1 MEG pots, but that's easily tamed with a quick turn of the tone knob. Wide open, it's Bakersfield twang all day long, but once you get used to the feel and response of the higher value pots, you find those sweet spots where you can coax a fatter, rounder tone out of the guitar. Neck carves, nut widths, and hardware were all changing, and quite often we see these transitional features mixed up in one instrument. Occasionally, a 1965 model will feature some of the more desirable features found in 1964 or earlier examples, and such is the case with this Special. The wide 1 11/16" nut as opposed to the 1 5/8" and subsequent 1 9/16" widths is perhaps the most desirable feature, followed by nickel plated hardware and the earlier wide-bevel body contours and small guard that gave way to the narrow bevels and large guard of the latter part of the 60s.

There's lots to be said about great vintage Les Pauls, but the twin P90s in an SG can flat out deliver, with some meaty midrange punch and a bright, cutting top end response that cuts through a mix with ease. While the 'Junior' style configuration is more stripped down, the fundamental tone of this thin-bodied slab Mahogany electric is very much present. With its single dogear P90 pickup and wraparound bridge/tailpiece, the presence and attack are right up front along with great clarity and top end. The lack of a second pickup allows the lone P90 to absorb all of the string activity, which increases harmonic complexity, dynamic response, and the pickup's relation to the volume and tone controls. This particular guitar includes its original pickups, original ABR-1 bridge and Lyre Vibrola tailpiece w/ arm, and original pickguard. Laurent refretted the neck to perfection with Jescar 51100 fret wire and installed repro aged Kluson waffleback tuners. The original pots were replaced with period 1964 CTS 500k pots while keeping the remainder of the harness intact, and a new set of nylon bridge saddles were installed.

In somewhat common/typical fashion, this SG experienced some very minor stress fractures at the neck joint, all of which have been attended to in order to ensure stability. It's 100% stable and vetted by Laurent and our staff here. There's evidence of some light overspray atop the original Walnut finish, just on the back of the body. All that being said, it's functioning perfectly and sounding incredible with the late Pat # T-Top pickups.

SG Customs aren't nearly as common as their Standard and Special counterparts, and they offer something quite unique in terms of their spec. Of course, you can find those 2 and 4 positions with some delicate placement of the switch.

In terms of originality, it's somewhat of a unique piece. The body, electronics, hardware, and plastics all date squarely to 1969. The wiring harness has pot codes that date to the 34th week of 1969. The pearloid-backed 3-ply guard is correct for the year as well. The original stamped Fender Pat Pend saddles and tremolo bridge are intact and original, albeit with the replacement of 3 saddle height screws that were previously rusted out. The neck is dated March of 1968 but looks like it may have sat at the factory before being paired up with the guitar. It has a poly finish throughout which indicates finish was applied after Fender changed over from nitrocellulose as well. It certainly makes for an interesting story, but not entirely out of the question considering how Fender was operating at the time.

As a single-owner instrument that received a healthy amount of play time over the years, the frets were simply worn through and unsalvageable. Built within the first official year of production, this ES-355 has all the hallmarks of the earliest iteration and design of the now-heralded model; a thin 3-ply laminate top, solid Maple center block, and "conversion" headstock. We'll touch on that last point later...

What makes this ES-355 different from the ES-335 is primarily in appointment level, but more commonly the 355s are outfitted with a Bigsby tailpiece and wired for stereo use via the Varitone circuit. For one to obtain an ES-355 with a mono input and a stop bar tailpiece, it would have to be a special order. There's no denying that this ES-355 ticks the boxes for a special order. Mechanically, we're now closer to a stock ES-335, which puts this ES-355 into the 'ultra rare' category.

Focusing on the aesthetics now - the ES-355 has 7-ply binding on top, 3-ply binding on the back, and 5-ply binding on the headstock. On top of that, the ES-355 has an Ebony fingerboard with large pearl block inlays as opposed to the Rosewood fingerboards and pearl dot inlays used on ES-335s. The slightly enlarged headstock of the ES-355 reveals a couple of early changes (or evolutions) in the build process. Sure, there's the split diamond inlay and factory Grover Rotomatic tuners that sets it apart from the ES-335, but Gibson got thrifty in their manufacturing process with these necks. Often mistaken for re-drilled tuning machine holes, early examples of ES-355s reveal that Gibson simply took ES-335 neck stock that was already drilled and spaced for tuner orientation, and plugged these holes in order to convert the neck to that of an ES-355. The larger overall size of the ES-355 headstock required larger wings and changed the spacing of the tuners. Instead of cutting another neck, Gibson just reworked a 335 neck to accommodate the change. This is commonly revealed through the finish of the factory "stinger", a thin laminate applied the back of the headstock, painted black with a sharp taper that points towards the body terminating at about the halfway point between the nut and 1st fret. A keen eye can spot the circular imprints left from the factory dowels.

We're deep into nerd territory here, but we embrace it on guitars like this. They tell a story about how Gibson was working through concepts of business, design, and manufacturing at a critical point in the era of electric guitar.

Now that we've covered the intricacies of the early ES-355 model, let's dive into the good stuff. TONE!

Rocking its original 'double white' PAFs with undisturbed gold plated covers and factory wiring harness with pots dating to the 44th week of 1958, this ES-355 reaches a level of tonal nirvana us mortals simply do not come in contact with on a daily basis! Clean tones are addictively good - a perfect balance of fundamental power, harmonic complexity, and an airiness that delivers some serious touch sensitivity these PAFs are known for. In the neck position, it's all about clarity and definition. Chimey and slightly forward sounding without ever feeling edgy. Switching to the bridge position rewards you with all the sweet, open midrange response and top end sizzle that is nothing short of amazing. Thanks to the stop bar tailpiece, all of that acoustic resonance and sustain is captured and put on display through the pickups. Plenty of focus, sure; but the tonality is deeper and more expressive thanks to the semi-hollow construction. The Ebony board tends to add a little bit of extra "zing" in the trebles as well.

Playability is absolutely top notch with this guitar. The neck carve leans more to the slim/medium profile sometimes found on '58s and later '59s with a nice taper, and the knockout pro refret done by Joe Konkoly of Elderly Instruments makes both chords and single-note runs a total breeze to play. You can go from Chucky Berry and Freddie King to Keith Richards and Alex Lifeson with ease.

When it comes to originality, this rare beast is about as complete as it gets. The only changes made to the guitar are the pro refret and evidence of some light overspray on the back of the neck. There's a small fingerboard binding crack on the treble side that is stable. All hardware is original to the guitar, including the short seam stop bar tailpiece, no-wire ABR-1, PAFs, pots, switch, and tuners. Plastics are also original to the guitar. There is evidence of a minor stress fracture on the back of the headstock near the edge of the stinger, but it has been evaluated by our team and by Elderly at the time of the refret and has been confirmed as completely stable without any structural implications. Outside of some minor play and handling wear, it's a very clean guitar with a great vibe and other-worldly tone.

As 1 of less than a half dozen original examples, it's an exceedingly rare guitar that commands attention and demands to be played.

Priced with original Lifton hardshell case (Fair Condition)

**NOTE: Payment is only available via wire transfer. Following the model style of Gibson's ES-125T model, it features a 16" lower bout thinline hollow body with a single florentine style cutaway. All-maple laminate construction for the body and a Mahogany neck with a Rosewood fingerboard round out the tonewood, matching up with the ES-125T identically. It was played almost exclusively at home during its tenure with the owner, and only left the house on a number of occasions to accompany the owner's younger brother on some Nashville stints in the 1960s (word is there are a few pictures of this very Goldtop with the brother, but they've yet to surface). It's a supremely vibey, clean, and amazing sounding example of one of the most famous Les Paul models in existence.

Based on the serial number and original pot codes (23rd and 25th weeks of 1953, respectively, on the Bridge and Neck volume pots), this Les Paul dates roughly to middle 1953, firmly positioning it as a true "Version 2.0" Goldtop.

Gibson had corrected some of the playability issues commonly associated with original 1952 and early 1953 Les Paul models, which had a shallower neck set and had been outfitted with long trapeze tailpieces. Early in 1953, when Gibson first introduced the wraparound bridge, you'll still find transitional 'wraptail' examples with the shallow neck set; by the time this LP was built, the neck set had been corrected. The result is a much more enjoyable playing experience, with a guitar that can be properly adjusted to the player's preferences and also enhances intonation along with better overall action. Examples like this very guitar are what truly paved the way for this model to reach the status it so clearly has deserved.

There's a wide-sweeping generalization that Les Pauls aren't the lightest solidbodies to come out of the Golden Era, but occasionally you'll find one like this '53 that is suprisingly lean. At just a hair over 8.5 lbs on our scale, it's about as light as a true Les Paul gets. You'll find very few examples lighter than this one. Did we say it was light?!

The lightness of that great old Mahogany slab and carved Maple top translates into an incredibly lively guitar. The chunky C neck is incredibly comfortable and has the perfect taper for this time period at just under .1" between frets 1-12. The neck and body are in perfect harmony, with a strong resonance that can be felt in almost any position on the neck. Much of that aforementioned acoustic activity wouldn't be as prominent, however, if it weren't for a few changes that were enacted to bring the very best out of this guitar.

When we first acquired the guitar, we knew it would take some delicate but necessary work to get it playing and sounding the way it should. The original small frets were completely worn out from decades of consistent play time. This must have also resulted in a very worn-out nut, as the original had been replaced some time ago. The factory wraparound tailpiece was also heavily played in, with some notches grooved into the aluminum from the pressure of the strings. The short 1/2" bushings - another common ailment for early wraptail Gibsons (through about mid 1956) that lead to bridge lean - were causing some substantial bridge lean further diminishing playability. For reasons we can only assume were aesthetically motivated, the original polepiece screws were replaced at some point with a set of chrome-plated polepieces. The original input jack plate - while original to the guitar - suffered some damage seemingly long ago where it appeared that the instrument cable had been knocked, causing a depression/crack. Lastly, the original pickup toggle switch's internal tip and contact springs were heavily fatigued, making it very difficult for the switch to stay properly seated in the preferred position.

Our supremely talented and (thankfully) local New England luthier, Maine's Laurent Brondel, gave this '53 LP the ultimate spa treatment. Laurent masterfully refretted the guitar with Jescar 51100 fret wire and installed a 6/6 nylon nut in the process. He then carefully removed the original bushings and installed full length MojoAxe bushings along with a MojoAxe CWT-A lightweight nickel-plated and compensated 50s style wraparound bridge. The original studs were used. Laurent removed the original toggle switch from the body cavity and repaired the switch components without so much as a bit of desoldering work to identify that anything had been done. Lastly, he fabricated and installed custom Maple pickup spacers and installed them beneath each of the original P90 pickups in order to provide further adjustability and output balance. A new MojoAxe input jack plate has been installed, giving the original input jack the proper support it needs. We installed a set of CrazyParts fillister cheesehead polepiece screws made with the proper material to restore the proper look and makeup of the original pickups, leaving just one of the older replacement screws (bridge pickup, B string) in as a reminder of its history.

If we're just talking playability here, there might not be many examples of a '53 Goldtop that play like this one. You've got the best of both worlds - fresh frets, a cleanly cut nut, and intonatable bridge with an expert setup combined with all of the critical original components unaffected. You can take this out of its original 4-latch case and just get to playing.

Plugged in tone is remarkable, to put it bluntly. The original P90 pickups both measure almost identically for output at just a touch under 8k DCR each. Neck position is sweet and clear, with a beautiful natural compression when you dig in - almost the way the neck pickups in those great bolt-neck doublecuts sound a year later. Bridge position is also nice and clear, with great string definition and top end attack. It's got some nice sizzle with that medium-high output, but not so overpowering that it forgoes dynamic response. Middle position is a true delight - scooped mids with a rounded low and combined with top end chirp. There's really no way to get a bad sound out of this guitar.

The stock wiring harness shows undisturbed solder throughout, with all original Centralab 500k pots and Grey Tiger capacitors. All pots function just as they should, yielding some of the very best shades of tonal nuance that modern wiring and components still cannot quite capture. The original Kluson 'no line' tuners still work great and remain in great condition, with just the D and G tuners having slightly bent shafts from having gotten caught on the case lining over the years.

It's no wonder that this remained a one-owner instrument until now, and as the family described to us, it was the owner's pride and joy. Just one look or one strum, and you can understand.

70 years of age never looked better than it did in this Goldtop.

1-piece Mahogany body w/ 3-piece carved Maple top

Original Goldtop finish with original natural Mahogany body finish

Mahogany neck w/ bound Brazilian Rosewood fingerboard and original trapezoid inlays

Full C neck profile: .90" @ 1st fret / .99" @ 12th fret

Pro refret and 6/6 nylon nut installation by Laurent Brondel - Jescar 51100 fretwire

Original Kluson 'no line' tuners

Original P90 pickups: 7.95k neck / 7.97k bridge

CrazyParts replacement pickup polepieces and custom Maple spacers installed

MojoAxe CWT-A compensated wraparound bridge (original wraparound bridge included)

MojoAxe 1" long threaded bushings installed (original 1/2" bushings included)

Original wraptail stud bushings

Original wiring harness with undisturbed solder throughout - Centralab pots and Grey Tiger capacitors

Neck volume pot shows 25th week of 1953 / Bridge volume pot shows 23rd week of 1953)

Mid-1953 factory cavity route - small input jack channel rout, no trapeze grounding wire channel rout

Original pickguard, catalin switch tip, and poker chip

Original barrel knobs - bridge pickup tone knob appears as an early vintage replacement

Replacement MojoAxe input jack (original included)

Weight: 8lb 9oz

Original 4-latch Brown hardshell case in fair condition

Original Gibson hang tag w/ matching serial number and original price listed
