"As much as I enjoy making a "traditional" instrument out of the finest "tonewoods", I also love making instruments which push the boundaries and open new possibilities to musicians willing to explore and expand the scope of their music. The influences manifested in the Totemguitar line, to date close to 400 instruments, go back to Dada, Surrealism, collage and assemblage art, Pop art, and sometimes a more conceptual approach, along with the occasional dose of pure kitsch." - Michael Spalt
We have to admit, Michael Spalt's "Sybil" has a special place in our hearts. Perhaps it's the rosette featured in the somewhat large piece of spruce embedded in Michael's signature resin top. Maybe it's the pieces of what appear to be a dismantled potentiometer on the upper horn. Acoustic meets electric?
Either way, we love the way this guitar looks, feels, and plays. Like all of Michael's guitars, they are way more a design concept or "art guitar". The build quality is on par with anything we carry - that is to say, damned near flawless. These are incredibly high-end guitars that just happen to have a very inventive approach to the top - objects suspended in a specially designed resin.
Once in hand, you'll notice how unexpectedly light and balanced the guitar is - 6lbs 12oz! The neck is chunky and round, though very comfortable and different than, say, a Les Paul, and the satin finish (the back of the body is satin as well) feels awesome. The setup is great and overall the guitar plays very easily - very snappy, slinky, and resonant.
So how does it sound, you ask? Awesome. Unique, articulate, chimey. It really encompasses all the food groups tonally - Strat, Tele, and LP tones are all here - and - there's not a ton of knob turning / tinkering to make that happen either. Plugged straight into a '66 Vibrolux, we were able to get some really inspiring, very useable tones.
We love Michael's guitars and Sybil is yet another reminder as to why - don't miss this unique guitar! Priced with hardshell case.
