"I didn't want to make Telecasters or Stratocasters or Les Paul copies, I wanted to do my own thing. Because these are original shapes, I had the flexibility to do anything I wanted." -Saul Koll
The Koll booth created quite the buzz at this year's NAMM show in California. We snagged as many as we could for the shop and up next is this killer Troubadour model!
Newly re-released at this year's NAMM show, the Troubadour is a bolt-neck, long-scale model that retains Koll's classic "Glide" body shape and everything we love about Saul's guitars - cool old-school looks, killer tones, inspiring playability, and an overall musicality.
There's clearly a nod to Fender on this particular Troubadour - a beautifully relic'd Shoreline Gold nitro finish, Curtis Novak Jazzmaster pickups, and a Mastery Bridge/Trem - but this definitely isn't a Jazzmaster clone. Koll guitars have their own unique personality and one of Saul's gifts as a builder is the ability to spin various influences - in this case the legendary Jazzmaster - into his own distinct creations that bear the hallmarks of their inspiration, but never dip into replica territory.
This guitar sounds fantastic plugged into our trusty Victoria Vicky Verb. The bridge pickup delivers an almost Tele-like twang while the neck position puts you closer to the classic, bell-like Jazzmaster clean tone. The middle position does exactly what you'd think, which is to say it's an addictive blend of Jazzmaster and Tele-like tones. Clean to overdriven, we were knocked out by Curtis Novak's pickups and the overall slinky feel of this guitar. Very, very cool to be sure!
We simply love this bolt-neck Troubadour and it's no frills, all tone vibe (it's also one of the 1st two Koll's to sport a Mastery Trem/Bridge). Highly recommended to anyone considering an offset style guitar! Priced with a custom Koll Deluxe G&G case.
