Martin D-18 (1942)

Sold

This is perhaps the finest player's vintage Martin D-18 we've ever seen. Built in 1942, it's got the features everyone's looking for: scalloped bracing, an Adirondack Spruce top and the gorgeous, warm, clear note articulation only an old D-18 can deliver. A number of the area's best flatpickers have been through the shop in the last few days--all of them have played it, and the consensus is clear: it's a stunningly good D-18, probably the lightest one we've ever held, with absolutely gut-punching bass for a mahogany guitar. If you're looking for a pre-war Martin D-18 that has the authentic sound and issues that keep the price down, you won't find a better one than this! It's crack-free, unbelievably loud & powerful, and it rings for days on end.

The story behind the magic--this D-18 was refinished in the early 70's by a local classical guitar builder (and then authorized Martin warranty technician). He gave the guitar a thin French polish, which makes this the best looking "re-fin" guitar we've seen. He also repaired a patch of mahogany in the bass side, lower bout (it's visible, but it's good work). We had local luthier TJ Thompson do a neck reset, reshape the bridge and fingerboard (both replaced in the 70's), and make a new guard. New tuners were also installed to replace a set of Grovers (ouch!). As always, TJ's work is meticulous and exacting, and the guitar plays like butter with perfect intonation on every fret.

With older hardshell case. Please call us for a full in-hand description!
