Collings Guitars

Thursday April 17th
An Evening with Berklee's Larry Baione and Jim Kelly

Workshop: 6:00-7:30pm
Concert: 8:00pm

The Music Emporium and Collings Guitars proudly welcome Berklee College of Music's Larry Baione and Jim Kelly for a stellar guitar workshop and intimate concert. In a hands-on workshop, Larry and Jim will explore approaches to solo and duo playing, lead and backup rhythm, in a variety of jazz, blues, r&b settings, and more. They'll follow it up with a concert featuring several of their own personal Collings guitars, including archtop acoustic , flattop and electric models. With over 50 years combined experience at Berklee, and having taught and toured all over the world, these are two refreshingly humble musicians, inspiring players, encouraging teachers and really wonderful people. Come for the workshop and stay for the concert that follows!

View PhotosMore on the players and the workshop:

Larry Baione is Chair of the Berklee College of Music Guitar Department, Baione has been a faculty member since 1974 and has been chair since 1990. He has studied from Lenzy Wallace, Mick Goodrick, Bill Harris, William Leavitt, Bucky Pizzarelli and Jim Hall. He received his Bachelors in Music from Berklee and his Masters in Music from New England Conservatory. When attending Berklee, he received the Downbeat Hall of Fame Scholarship award.

After graduating Berklee, Larry was principal guitarist in the Army Band, stationed in Washington D.C. He performed in the White House and throughout the United States with the Army Blues. In 1996, Baione toured South America for the state department as one of the inaugural Jazz Amabassadors representing the unique American art form.

Larry is author of the Berklee Practice Method for Guitar. He performs in numerous jazz, concert and recording ensembles, settings that range from solo guitar to big band. He continues to perform and give clinics throughout the world. His recent recording Playing Time consists of original compositions and standards in a trio setting.

Great players practice with great teachers. Berklee instructor Jim Kelly has taught some of the world's most accomplished guitarists for over 20 years, and now tours the world helping Berklee to developed a diverse, international student body. A musician's musician well-versed in a wide range of styles, Kelly is as capable in a jazz realm or in a blues jam as he is at a traditional Irish session.

This workshop will help you develop your own approaches and phrase your own solos, the ideas you'll learn finding application in a cross-section of styles, from rock, blues, jazz, to funk, Latin or r&b. You'll come away with empowering ideas about style, tempo, form, fingerings, and practice.

I cannot emphasize enough how much we enjoy these musicians, as players and as people. We hope you can join us , as you're in for a night of great, honest, joyful music and learning.

Collings Guitars

The Music Emporium & Collings guitars are thrilled to offer a workshop and concert by the extraordinary guitarist Tim Sparks on Thursday February the 28th. Tim Sparks won the National Fingerstyle Guitar Championships in 1993 and has since gone on to tour the globe and record an amazing body of work. He has shared cd space with some of the most respected guitarists working today, such as Marc Ribot and Bill Frisell. Most notably, Tim has carved out a unique niche for himself by reinterpreting Jewish music for solo guitar and chamber ensembles on John Zorn’s Tzadik label. Tim’s compositions are unlike anything else in the guitar repertoire and are fascinating examples of the limitless possibilities of the instrument. Darkly romantic and technically brilliant, his songs are models of gifted arrangement and inspired improvisation.

Both the workshop and the concert will be an opportunity to revel in Tim’s vast musical vocabulary. During the workshop, he will explore and teach two compositions, one focusing on the Jewish and Balkan influences in his music, and one drawing on roots music. This is also a time to get Tim’s advice on any musical questions you may have regarding arranging, improvising, or performing.

For more than a few years now Tim's main guitar has been a Collings OM1 with a cedar top and mahogany back and sides. The concert is a chance to hear an exceptional musician take full advantage of the range of his Collings, as Tim performs music in the aforementioned genres and treats us to new unrecorded pieces. This is a once in a blue moon event and a fantastic opportunity for local guitarists. Don’t just take our word for it. Leo Kottke had the following to say about Tim Sparks, “I'm Tim Sparks' biggest fan. His stuff is very difficult to play but it doesn't sound difficult. I think that's real musicianship. He's really one of the best musicians I know.” Bill Frisell said of Spark’s album Neshamah, “Tim Sparks is incredible, a complete original. Every guitarist on the planet has got to hear this.”

Thursday, February 28
Workshop: 6:00-7:30pm
Cost: $30 and includes admission to the following concert. Space is limited so signing up in advance is encouraged.

Concert: 8:00pm

Bob Halperin & Martin Grosswendt:
Bottleneck Blues Slide Workshop
Open D Tuning

Halperin
Grosswendt

Wednesday June 20th, 7-10pm

This is the second of an ongoing series of Blues Workshops with the venerable pair. The plan is to offer more and different, specific topics each session. This evening will be dedicated to open D tuning, as it is among the more popular and useful tunings, and with its root note in the bass, it's a logical place to start a slide exploration.

Halperin & Grosswendt are masterful, soulful players, top-notch teachers, and blues musicologists. They are absolutely the real deal - this music courses through their veins, and its authenticity is conveyed effortlessly in the music that comes through their hands and hearts.

If it is any indication, when these two come to town, the whole staff volunteers to stay late and cover that night, hoping to learn a trick or two...

Topics covered will include:

  • How to approach the slide.
  • Tonal differences in brass vs. glass
  • Horizontal – not vertical – movement
  • Getting Left and Right-Hand Muting together
  • Pull-offs and Hammer-ons with the slide
  • Vibrato technique.
  • Thorough deconstruction of 2 tunes by Blind Willie Johnson & Tampa Red.

Some primarily open D players of note include:

  • Blind Willie Johnson
  • Tampa Red
  • Bukka White
  • Son House

Cost is: $45 7-10pm Bring your own guitar & slide (Yes, we sell slides if you need one!)

John McGann: Artist in Residence, May 2007

Mark Hanson: Two Fingerstyle Guitar Workshops
Saturday April 21st

Mark is a very popular workshop leader here at TME, a perennial big draw, and for good reason: everyone, regardless of level, leaves his workshops with serious tools to improve their playing and knowledge. His style is unhurried, his presentation clear, his ideas are well-thought out.

Perhaps most importantly, Mark is encouraging, empowering his students to ascend through their plateaus and reach new playing heights. I can guarantee it.

As you may have guessed already, he's a TREMENDOUS player to boot.

In this workshop Mark expands on his easy "Triad Power" method of viewing the entire guitar neck. He will review his three-note visualization method, and expand it to cover all six strings. He will also expand your understanding of how more complex chords are built from the simple triads, and how to use them in your playing. Tab of Mark's cool solo arrangement of "Swinging on a Star" is included.
Fee: $40.00.

Workshop #2 - Arranging Beatles for Solo Fingerstyle Guitar
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

In this workshop, Mark will discuss his process of developing a rich, playable solo guitar arrangement for intermediate level players. And he will show you how he has applied these lessons to his new arrangements of the Beatles chestnuts "I'm So Happy Just to Dance With You" and "It's Only Love." TAB included. Fee: $40.00. Limited seating!

Discount: $75 if you attend both workshops.

Space is limited. We have had to turn some folks away in the past, so please contact us now to secure spots. Email, call or come by today!

An Evening with Bill Collings

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1st, Time 8:00 PM

Visit the gallery of photos from the Bill Collings event...

As part of our continuing “Meet the Maker” series, we are proud to welcome Bill Collings and Steve McCreary from Collings Guitars & Mandolins.  The biennial Collings visit is fast becoming tradition here at The Music Emporium.

Collings has been quite busy of late.

Some highlights in the interim since his ’04 visit include:

  • Reaching Serial #10,000 in the form of a spectacular D-45 Brazilian, sold through The Music Emporium
  • Introducing the Collings 0, inspired by TME’s suggestion that Collings ought to revive this long-lost classic guitar, and based on a 30s Martin 0 that we sent down to Austin
  • Moving into a new, larger shop, with the intentions of better workflow, more space for proper wood storage, etc.  They do not intend to expand acoustic guitar production, preferring to maintain Collings’ ultra-high standard of quality
  • Expanding mandolin production, introducing a varnish finish, wide nut width, custom colors and a Deluxe MF5V
  • Offering recently the varnish finish option for guitars
  • Launching a line of stellar Collings Electrics, featuring the Collings City Limits Deluxe, I-35 Deluxe and 290 models, modern reinterpretations (i.e. improvements!) of three classic electric guitars

We’ve been working hard just keeping up!

Stu and Ian visited Collings in April ’05, gaining insight into mandolin production and gaining pounds at the local BBQ establishments. Stu returned to Austin this year, and Joe made it down to visit the new factory and hand-pick the first Collings electric to roll off the line. We also learned that we are Collings largest dealer worldwide, and have been for several years!!

Now it’s your turn to meet Bill, see the new electrics, learn about acoustic & archtop design, varnish vs. lacquer finish, and just where to find the best BBQ in Texas!

Light refreshments will be served.

Bill wil be in-store from 1-6pm on Saturday December 2nd as well!

Please RSVP by Thanksgiving, so we know you’re coming!

"The Circle Of 5ths Actually Goes Backwards"

Wednesday, September 20, 7PM

“Guy ...has practically invented a finger-picked guitar style, closer to jazz piano than guitar!" –– The Boston Globe.

“He can pick himself a guitar!" –– Doc Watson.

“Guy Van Duser is a great guitarist!" –– Chet Atkins.

Guy Van Duser teaches essential chord theory for guitarists. This workshop offers basic music theory focusing on the construction of chord patterns and cycles for song writing (or song understanding, if you are trying to work by ear). What you'll learn leads toward improving arranging skills for guitar, such as chord/melody instrumental arrangements, transposing, and more advanced techniques. Any level.

The cost for the workshop is $75, and this is 'hands-on' so bring your guitar!

About Guy:

Guy Van Duser is internationally known for his unique “stride guitar” style of playing, as well as his imaginative and sometimes outrageous arrangements for finger-style guitar.  Guy is a graduate of Oberlin College in music, has thirteen albums and CDs available on Rounder, Daring, and Green Linnet Records, as well as many more in collaboration with artists  such as Bill Staines and Jeanie Stahl, and is the author of “Stride Guitar" from Mel Bay Publications.

Guy Van Duser’s “stride guitar” technique is a fusion of the finger-picking virtuosity of Chet Atkins with the swing and stride piano styles of jazz pianists of the 1930s. Simultaneously playing bass lines, chords, and melody, he has elevated the swing–style guitar from its traditional rhythmic–accompaniment role, and has influenced a new generation of guitarists.

As a composer, Guy produces soundtracks such as “Frontline", “Nova", and “The American Experience" (that's also Guy, playing guitar on the "Antiques Roadshow" theme song). The documentary film, “Hellfire: A Journey from Hiroshima", for which Guy composed the music, received an Academy Award nomination.
