Wednesday June 20th, 7-10pmThis is the second of an ongoing series of Blues Workshops with the venerable pair. The plan is to offer more and different, specific topics each session. This evening will be dedicated to open D tuning, as it is among the more popular and useful tunings, and with its root note in the bass, it's a logical place to start a slide exploration. Halperin & Grosswendt are masterful, soulful players, top-notch teachers, and blues musicologists. They are absolutely the real deal - this music courses through their veins, and its authenticity is conveyed effortlessly in the music that comes through their hands and hearts. If it is any indication, when these two come to town, the whole staff volunteers to stay late and cover that night, hoping to learn a trick or two... Topics covered will include:
Some primarily open D players of note include:

Perhaps most importantly, Mark is encouraging, empowering his students to ascend through their plateaus and reach new playing heights. I can guarantee it.
As you may have guessed already, he's a TREMENDOUS player to boot.
In this workshop Mark expands on his easy "Triad Power" method of viewing the entire guitar neck. He will review his three-note visualization method, and expand it to cover all six strings. He will also expand your understanding of how more complex chords are built from the simple triads, and how to use them in your playing. Tab of Mark's cool solo arrangement of "Swinging on a Star" is included.
Fee: $40.00.
In this workshop, Mark will discuss his process of developing a rich, playable solo guitar arrangement for intermediate level players. And he will show you how he has applied these lessons to his new arrangements of the Beatles chestnuts "I'm So Happy Just to Dance With You" and "It's Only Love." TAB included. Fee: $40.00. Limited seating!
Discount: $75 if you attend both workshops.
Space is limited. We have had to turn some folks away in the past, so please contact us now to secure spots. Email, call or come by today!

Collings has been quite busy of late.
Some highlights in the interim since his ’04 visit include:
We’ve been working hard just keeping up!
Stu and Ian visited Collings in April ’05, gaining insight into mandolin production and gaining pounds at the local BBQ establishments. Stu returned to Austin this year, and Joe made it down to visit the new factory and hand-pick the first Collings electric to roll off the line. We also learned that we are Collings largest dealer worldwide, and have been for several years!!
Now it’s your turn to meet Bill, see the new electrics, learn about acoustic & archtop design, varnish vs. lacquer finish, and just where to find the best BBQ in Texas!
Light refreshments will be served.
Please RSVP by Thanksgiving, so we know you’re coming!

"The Circle Of 5ths Actually Goes Backwards"
Wednesday, September 20, 7PM
“Guy ...has practically invented a finger-picked guitar style, closer to jazz piano than guitar!" –– The Boston Globe. “He can pick himself a guitar!" –– Doc Watson. “Guy Van Duser is a great guitarist!" –– Chet Atkins. |
Guy Van Duser teaches essential chord theory for guitarists. This workshop offers basic music theory focusing on the construction of chord patterns and cycles for song writing (or song understanding, if you are trying to work by ear). What you'll learn leads toward improving arranging skills for guitar, such as chord/melody instrumental arrangements, transposing, and more advanced techniques. Any level.
The cost for the workshop is $75, and this is 'hands-on' so bring your guitar!
About Guy:
Guy Van Duser is internationally known for his unique “stride guitar” style of playing, as well as his imaginative and sometimes outrageous arrangements for finger-style guitar. Guy is a graduate of Oberlin College in music, has thirteen albums and CDs available on Rounder, Daring, and Green Linnet Records, as well as many more in collaboration with artists such as Bill Staines and Jeanie Stahl, and is the author of “Stride Guitar" from Mel Bay Publications.
Guy Van Duser’s “stride guitar” technique is a fusion of the finger-picking virtuosity of Chet Atkins with the swing and stride piano styles of jazz pianists of the 1930s. Simultaneously playing bass lines, chords, and melody, he has elevated the swing–style guitar from its traditional rhythmic–accompaniment role, and has influenced a new generation of guitarists.
As a composer, Guy produces soundtracks such as “Frontline", “Nova", and “The American Experience" (that's also Guy, playing guitar on the "Antiques Roadshow" theme song). The documentary film, “Hellfire: A Journey from Hiroshima", for which Guy composed the music, received an Academy Award nomination.
